Buddha Images

- Various Buddha depictions are defined as Buddha images,

but actually a image is a 2 dimensional object such as a photo, painting or very often in old Buddhism a mural depicting Buddha. A Buddha Image usually has some different measurements for physical proportion, there are exaggerated earlobes and the so called “enlightenment elevation” on the top of the head.

Apart from the usual basic Buddha Images depicting a standing Buddha, reclining Buddha or sitting Buddha there are other forms such as a laughing Buddha. A laughing Buddha image or rather statues or sculpture is often a jade Buddha created from white jade, lavender jade and imperial jade in general. There are other materials such as carved wood statues, sandstone, ceramic, clay, marble and masonry, the last mainly for big Buddha statues. 

However, images are quite deceptive since they are only two dimensional and naturally only from one angle. Only in abstract art, in particular Picasso painted objects, such as a head from different angles into one picture, also small children often do it this way since they have a problem to paint or draw perspective, all other facets are hidden from the eyes, statue is however visible from all angles, just have a look at our Buddhism pictures here, they tell more than words.
